I came for the cover and stayed for the setting.

It's a very green story about life in a primal sort of way, focusing on people to people relationships and people to nature relationships, with a bit of nature to nature thrown in as well. The setting was both epic in scope and beautiful in the details, yet the story was grounded to very personal goals and conflicts for the characters, which felt nice in contrast. And as always I appreciate it when an author doesn't feel the need to explain every little aspect of the plot, and instead trusts the reader to draw some of their own conclusions.

For genre the book sort of settles somewhere in between weird fiction and fantasy, probably closer to the latter. While I was expecting the book to be a bit creepier than it ended up being, I wasn't too upset with what I got. It never went into the cheesy realm of fantasy I feared it might.

The Trees often feels like it's trying to say a lot, and while some of it is delicious food for thought, there was the occasional point that felt a little too on the nose for me. Other points felt like they were just out of my reach and I couldn't quite grasp them. Maybe I'll have a eureka moment on my next camping trip and feel the need to bump this book up a star, but for now it's a really good read worth your time if you're the sort of person who likes to be outside. Or likes unicorns.

the book seems to end too abruptly, if that makes sense considering it's such a long book to begin with. Or maybe it just seemed long because it was not interesting at all. I feel as though the author all of a sudden realized how long the book was getting with no end in sight and just hastily wrapped things up in a couple of chapters
It is a beautiful book but has some hard moments. It is an interesting look at what it means to live with and in nature and in communities. Shaw makes this possible with his magical realism told in such beautiful metaphors and imagery. Beautiful book with a beautiful, bittersweet ending. But, it does have some very painful parts. Especially for animal lovers.
Fantastic opening scene. Powerful concept. Believable scenarios. And then ....It kind of just drags its heels as do the characters, who don't develop despite the world shattering enormity of their situation.
This book captures all aspects of nature, from the beauty to the rawness. Shaw speaks to the connection between living beings while portraying the honest friendship developed between strangers. It was humbling to read as one slowly captures an understanding of humanity and our place in the natural world.
I loved this book. I would definitely recommend it. I read this for a book club, and it initiated great conversation about our relationship to nature and the way the author chose to develop the characters in ways both subtle and obvious.
Amazing story. I'm not usually a big fan of fantasy type literature, but this was a great fusion of fantasy and borderline apocalyptic horror. I couldn't put it down. One of the best reads I've had in many years. It's like a fairy tale for adults, and very imaginative. The characters so well developed that you feel like you know them personally, and the environmental descriptions are detailed and just perfect. Well done all around. I loved it.
Very imaginative concept. Flawed characters, which for me, is a plus. If I want superheroes, I'll read Marvel comics. This is a deep book, on so many levels. Made me think, without feeling preached at. Yes, it is rather slow going, but I found that to be nice for a change.
